Facebook Introduces AI-Powered Controls to Personalize Your Feed

    What’s New?

Social media platforms have traditionally decided what users see through recommendation algorithms that analyze their activity, interests, and engagement. However, Meta is now giving Facebook users a more direct way to influence those decisions.

The company has introduced a new AI-powered feature called “Your Algorithm,” allowing people to customize the content appearing in their Facebook Feed and Reels. Instead of depending entirely on automated recommendations, users can explain their interests in everyday language and tell the platform what they would prefer to see more or less often.

The feature represents another step toward making social media recommendations more personalized and giving users greater control over their online experience.

Tell Facebook What You Want to See

Facebook’s new feature allows users to communicate their content preferences without relying solely on traditional recommendation settings. For example, someone interested in artificial intelligence, technology news, travel, or fitness could tell Facebook to show more posts related to those subjects.

Similarly, users who are tired of seeing repetitive videos or particular types of posts can express their preferences and ask for less of that content.

The goal is to make recommendations feel more relevant to individual interests rather than allowing the algorithm to make every decision independently.

According to Meta, users can update their preferences whenever their interests change. The platform then uses this feedback to adjust recommendations, with changes appearing in users’ feeds in real time.

This approach makes personalization more interactive. Instead of simply watching the algorithm learn from their activity, users can actively explain what they want.

A Simpler Way to Manage Recommendations

Meta is also making content controls easier to access directly from individual Facebook posts.

The platform has updated its three-dot menu, giving users quicker access to options that help them manage recommendations. From this menu, users can open the Your Algorithm feature or select options such as “Interested” and “Not interested” to communicate their preferences.

These options provide a straightforward way to tell Facebook whether a particular post matches their interests.

The platform may also ask follow-up questions to understand why users like or dislike certain content. This additional feedback could help the system distinguish between closely related topics and deliver more relevant recommendations.

For instance, someone who enjoys technology news but dislikes celebrity gossip can provide clearer instructions about the content they want prioritized.

    Meta Expands Its Personalization Strategy

Facebook’s latest update is part of Meta’s broader effort to introduce more user-controlled recommendations across its social media platforms.

Instagram introduced Your Algorithm in June, building on an earlier rollout for Reels that began in December 2025. The feature expanded customization options across Instagram’s Feed and Explore sections.

Threads has also experimented with a similar approach through a feature called “Dear Algo,” which lets users influence the content recommended to them.

Together, these developments suggest that Meta wants to make recommendation systems more responsive to individual preferences across its different platforms.

The shift also reflects a wider change in how social networks approach content discovery. Rather than leaving personalization entirely to automated systems, platforms are exploring ways to let users participate more directly in shaping their experiences.

    Why This Matters

Recommendation algorithms play a major role in determining what people discover, watch, and discuss online. While personalized feeds can help users find interesting content, irrelevant recommendations can make social media feel repetitive or overwhelming.

Giving users more direct control could help address this problem by making it easier to communicate their interests and adjust recommendations as those interests evolve.

However, the feature’s effectiveness will depend on how accurately Facebook interprets user instructions and how consistently those preferences influence the content displayed.

    Final Thoughts

Facebook’s Your Algorithm feature introduces a more conversational approach to feed personalization. By allowing users to describe their preferences in natural language, Meta is making its recommendation system more interactive and accessible.

The bigger question is whether this additional control will meaningfully improve the everyday social media experience.

As AI becomes increasingly involved in deciding what people see online, giving users a stronger voice in those decisions could become an important part of the future of social networking.

The takeaway: Facebook is moving toward a model where users do more than consume algorithmically selected content—they can actively help shape it.
